Candidate: Alex Andrade
Office you’re seeking: State House District 2
Education: University of Florida, Bachelors and Science and Juris Doctorate
What are your three most important priorities if you are elected or re-elected?
- Protecting the freedoms and way of life of Northwest Floridians
- Bringing home more resources for our infrastructure and our environment
- Promoting the policies that have made Florida so successful these past several years under Governors Rick Scott and Ron DeSantis.
Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill this year banning most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy.
Do you support or oppose a complete ban on all abortions, with no exceptions?
I oppose all abortion except in circumstances where a pregnancy poses a threat or serious medical risk to the life of the mother.
Do you support or oppose a ban on all abortions, with exceptions in cases of rape or incest or if the mother’s health is at stake?
Because I believe that life begins at conception, I disagree with the argument that a child should be killed, simply for being conceived.
Would you support legislation to ban abortion once a heartbeat is detected?
Yes. However, I do not believe that the existence of a heartbeat accurately reflects when life begins for the purposes of this policy discussion.
PARENTAL RIGHTS IN EDUCATION/DON’T SAY GAY BILL
Gov. Ron DeSantis this year signed a bill into law that prohibits school districts from encouraging discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity in grades K-3, or in a way that is age or developmentally inappropriate. Proponents say the law promotes parental rights and transparency. Critics say the law discriminates against LGBTQ+ students.
Do you oppose or support repealing the law?
I fought for that law and oppose any attempt to repeal it. Strangers shouldn’t be encouraged to discuss their subjective beliefs about gender identity with young children outside the presence or knowledge of a child’s parents. Gender identity and sexual orientation are sensitive topics with many viewpoints. It is wrong for any adult in a position of power over a child to go behind a parent’s back and force their subjective, personal views on gender identity and sexual orientation on that child.
Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill this year to repeal a law allowing Walt Disney World to effectively self-govern its properties in Florida through the Reedy Creek Improvement District. It goes into effect next June.
Do you oppose or support repealing the law?
I co-sponsored the bill. I still support it. No one business deserves special treatment, but Disney has every right to compete on the same playing as Universal Studios and Sea World.
Former President Donald Trump has contested the results of the 2020 election through legal challenges in various states and the Supreme Court.
Do you believe the 2020 election that resulted in Joe Biden winning the presidency was accurate or inaccurate? Should it be decertified?
I’d rather see Biden impeached for the corruption he openly bragged about facilitating in Ukraine, and for the inflation and high gas prices his policies have caused.
In Florida, DeSantis and Trump have said that our elections were run well, and that Floridians should be proud of our free and fair elections. I’ve made Florida’s election laws even stronger, and supported DeSantis’s request for more election security. Other states exhibited incompetence, and their failures have made us lose trust in their election integrity and accuracy.
Gov. Ron DeSantis has pledged to sign what supporters call a “constitutional carry” bill that would allow residents to carry concealed guns without needing licenses.
Do you support or oppose the passage of this bill into law?
I wholeheartedly support it. I will continue to advocate for it in Tallahassee.
Do you support or oppose any legislation that would legalize small amounts of marijuana for recreational use?
I believe marijuana should be decriminalized and regulated more honestly, with consumer protections more similar in intent and purpose to alcohol. Marijuana should not be regulated as a schedule 1 narcotic. The FDA’s failure to remove marijuana as a schedule 1 narcotic has created bad and inconsistent policy nationwide. The FDA’s failures tie states’ hands from regulating marijuana like it should be regulated. Marijuana isn’t harmless, but the FDA can’t keep treating it like fentanyl.
