How to Read the Bible – Charles Spurgeon Sermon

Matthew 12:3 He answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? 4 He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests. 5 Or haven’t you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath and yet are innocent? 6 I tell you that something greater than the temple is here. 7 If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent.

2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Charles Haddon (C.H.) Spurgeon (June 19, 1834 January 31, 1892) was a British Reformed Baptist preacher who remains highly influential among Christians of different denominations, among whom he is still known as the “Prince of Preachers.” In his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to around 10,000,000 people, often up to 10 times a week at different places. His sermons have been translated into many languages. Spurgeon was the pastor of the New Park Street Chapel in London for 38 years. In 1857, he started a charity organization called Spurgeon’s which now works globally. He also founded Spurgeon’s College, which was named after him after his death.

Spurgeon was a prolific author of many types of works including sermons, an autobiography, a commentary, books on prayer, a devotional, a magazine, and more. Many sermons were transcribed as he spoke and were translated into many languages during his lifetime. Arguably, no other author, Christian or otherwise, has more material in print than C.H. Spurgeon.

  1. It’s been one week since God opened my eyes and especially my ears to Charles Spurgeon’s Sermons, and I feel like I’ve vaulted forward on my journey down the Narrow Path. I’ve been averaging one sermon per day thus far, and I’ve already received one heck of an education.
Even though it’s obviously not the voice of Spurgeon himself, I can feel the fire in just the words themselves.
    Thank you God!! Again.

  2. What has really helped me in understanding the Word as I read it was writing as I read and praying for sometime before reading.

Before reading, I would pray and just talk to the Lord until my thoughts were on God, (since just coming from something like studying or even speaking to others, my thoughts would be focused on these things) then I would pray for understanding and that the Holy Spirit would teach me and that all the words I put on paper would be his and as I go through each verse, I wouldn’t really think and would just start writing.

One more thing that is a great help for me is honouring the sabbath, by following the steps outlined in Isaiah 58:13-14, not doing thine own ways or finding thing own pleasures or speaking thine own words, no daydreaming, thinking of what I’m going to do tomorrow or anything else not related to God, it’s hard to keep but well, this is how Jesus lived everyday, isn’t it?

  3. It is Christmas Eve 2021 and I am sitting on my front porch listening to this Pastors sermons over 100 years after he spoke the words. God said "My Word will not return to me void". May our minds and hearts be renewed daily by seeking God and His Words of love to us. God bless!

  4. I was saved in my bedroom, reading The Gospel of John. When I got to chapters 18 & 19. I got on my knees next to bed ask God to forgive me, and let Jesus be Lord of my life. I have so much love for Gods’ Word, that He call me to teach His life changing Word through power of The Person of The Holy Spirit. Making Disciples for Gods Kingdom. And I thank God everyday for my saved life. Amen

  5. Thanks for putting this together. Appreciate from my heart. I love this man of God for his love for the Word of God! I have so many books of him in my library. This was my first audio hearing. Thank you Jesus!

  6. I think it is a shame that most Christians haven't read the Bible all the way through at least once.I first read the Bible all the way through when I was 20 and I study as I read the it. I read the Bible for a second time all the way through when I was 22 or 23. And it also helps to study Judaism and Jewish tradition so you know the background that the Bible is talking about and where it is coming from. I really love reading the Bible all the way through and doing a overall study and then reading individual books and studying the books individually and then studying individual chapters because you have to have good context to have good exegesis and hermeneutics when studying the Bible.I love topical Bible study as well and I think it is done the best by studying individual books and chapters of the Bible. I never get bored or tired with the Bible the Holy Spirit Burns in me and gives me a hunger for God's word and I read it and study it every way I can. And listen to every preacher, Bible teacher, theologian, that is of sound Doctrine I can.

  7. This has been the type of wisdom, understanding & knowledge of Word of GOD that touch the heart , spirit & mind of the common man. This passage is FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS!!!! Amen Thank you

  9. Honestly, I always refrain from reading the Bible, as I didn't understand, cos they were like parables. As time passed, I never gave up but knew that the Bible is the most powerful tool, for our life. So much of meaning and revelations.
Somehow, I came to this, 2 days ago and am glad.
Thank you and Praise the Lord.

  10. I do love this sermon full of amazing truth and grace with love I pray that every one knows the holy Bible for yourself it’s amazing don’t know where to start see the gospel of John a great place than Romans Ephesians and Galatians Act’s Corinthians 1&2 then ask the Holy Spirit what to read next

  11. Praise God! Take off your sandals before you open The Scriptures and endeavor into His Word after abruptly retreating from your earthly realm…you are about to walk on Holy Ground! How profound a statement! God is GREAT!

  12. Many of todays sermon just feel empty with the occasional scripture put in. Sermons now are more about self. This sermon spoke to me personally (just as it speak to many others). A true sermon. Heartfelt and with real meaning

  13. Charles could give the common man the hope and instructions to a deep sacred meaningful and finally a understanding relationship with our God. He plainly teaches us how. You see no matter how we feel about our capacities to understand it's really about our willingness to. That's the key that will open our minds. The Holy Spirit will measure our hearts and allow the exact measure we give.

  14. Matthew 13 :23 (KJV)

23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

  15. His sermons are so pastoral, encouraging, correcting and always exalting Christ. I praise God for His servants that He has gifted. May the blessed Lord be with us all and teach us of Himself! 🙏

  16. Worship in the holiness of the Spirit of God , whatever is just and right be the Spirit of Our Creator who created everything the entire planetary universe , will be our Judge as the Holiness of the Spirit of God continue to guide us ,taught people from genesis to revelation , current ministering brothers and sisters ,raised up men and women in every tribe every generation to share the good news of the righteousness of the Spirit and bring forth its blessing , healing , truth , compassion , kindness , goodness , patience , mercy , love of our Lord God Almighty .Thank you Lord Jesus for teaching us .

  17. Had I had such a preacher I would have never needed to explore all the other ideologies to come back again to the flock. This is the first time I have cried during a sermon, and I cried because of joy.
