Mental Illness in the Bible | The Bible and depression
We’ve been asked several times about what the Bible says regarding mental illness or depression. As someone who has suffered from relatively severe depression, I wanted to share with you my thoughts and depression and other forms of mental illness. In my opinion, seeking professional help is one of the BEST ways to deal with it (of course with prayer and support from your church family).

Too many Christians have a negative view of christian counseling. But, I think it’s essential in the life of a Christian

  1. Hi Justin! I am actually a mental health professional and a Christian, and I totally agree with your view, and so relieved to see some Christians really having a healthy perspective on this! Thanks for your input, your openness, and vulnerability to share your own story as well as your own views on this! Take care and keep creating!

  2. The problem I have is that I have a mental illness and it's tough to work part-time, and very, very tough to work full-time. I have anxiety issues that was diagnosed maybe 5 years ago.
My wife wants to get a divorce and she makes about $15.00 an hour, I work part-time at $10.50 or so an hour. We have agreed to split the costs with our two kids. I have looked at the numbers and it will be extremely, extremely tough for me to make it on my own. Every week, I'll get further and further into debt. I guess, I could just keep going, and going and down the road and file for bankrupcy. Maybe I could just do that.
Otherwise I feel that suicide is really the only way out of this. My wife could get married and make more money, but I don't think I will get married again. That makes me even further in the hole. Right now, I don't know. Maybe she'll change her mind and I'll be okay, but right now, suicide is definitely an option.

  3. I have been battling Depression for the last 2 and a half years. I have had bad experiences with my Church which include a public mental breakdown in a big Church in front of lots of Christians. This was a bad experience because other Christians spoke hurtful things to me during this breakdown. I have lost my zeal for God and feel like leaving Church. I don't know what to do because I want a relationship with God.

  4. Even though I’ve been inpatient and treated for illnesses such as schizophrenia because inner symptoms and behavior. Inside I truly feel my episodes or breakdowns followed a period of pushing away God even though he’s always been with me I used to listen to music religiously against God. After delving this deep into listening and singing violent and angry songs against God showed me videos and experiences that during psychosis I interpreted voices of a demon and seriously thought I had brewed some evil energy that showed on the outside. For years inside I went against my pastor father. Then in October 2017 all this blasphemy and life of sin came to a head. My experience with mental illness is always spiritual and I see as signs from God. It’s off the charts. I don’t necessarily relate to others that have schizophrenia my experience cannot be explained by psychology I promise you. But then I read that mental illness is not a result of sin and God is not punishing me. But I have made a full recovery and I’m not on a lot of medication and I hate my current psychiatrist. I give them no credit for my recovery. My life my mind even the way I look has changed. If you are in a pit of mental or physical distress. Get into Christ. If he’s reached out to me he will reach out to you. This video was in my opinion was a mess. I think he’s manic.

  5. Every person in the Bible suffered. Even Jesus. Today we know it as bipolar, back then it's called double minded. It's strange who can explain or know the mind of Christ?? If you're not suffering, if you haven't been through the fire, u doubt you're a true believer… He who is so concerned about gaining his life

  6. Just because you can go to a dentist to have him/her fix your tooth doesn’t mean that we should negate Bible doctrine concerning spiritual warfare (such as Ephesians 6). When Bible doctrine is overridden to any extent, it only serves the agenda of Satan. Even if it sounds noble.

  7. I gave your video a thumbs down for the simple fact depression anxiety is not a mental illness moron being a slow learner having Down syndrome being retarded this is mental illness so why not talk about mental illness instead of depression moron

  8. First off depression and anxiety is not a mental disease it is a disease of the feelings it has to do with your feelings when I think of mental illness I think of somebody like me that is a slow learner all the way down to somebody with Down Syndrome these are mental illnesses and all you're talking about is depression I have depression I have anxiety and I have figured out this is an unemotional problem nothing mental problem why is it people are so messed up that they can't distinguish between their mind and their feelings you can't trust your feelings not for 1 minute you can't because this is the first stage of attack for Satan why because your emotions affect your mind which is the second stage of Satan's attack and your mind affects your heart which is the third stage of Satan's attack because if he can get into your heart he has you I know I got close to getting to that point he started off with my emotions and then he got into my mind oh boy did he get into my mind almost committed suicide a couple times talkin about misinformation not putting you down brother I'd rather Build You Up I'm just trying to give you a little bit of information that I know and I'd like to see you take this information study God's word and maybe make a second video pray about it let God help you with this one

  9. Thank you for sharing the insight and wisdom you've gained through your own struggles So many young people are in the dark as to what to do to help themselves. As a parent, we want to help our children who struggle with mental illness. This video can bring healing. God bless you.

  10. I am Icelandic and have lots of family and friends who live in Canada and in the US.We hear reports of mental illnesses a lot and watch them in the news and read about them too.Two of the scariest examples of mental illness that have taken place in my life, involved a town community in the United States, and the story of Flight 93.Back in the early biblical days, there was no tv known to exist that made it easy to spread mental illnesses like wildfire. In the early 2000´s, however, reports of a mysterious airliner known as Flight 93 terrified locals and made national headlines, and convinced authorities to search for the mystery airliner. The story goes, it crashed. But in reality, the airliner had been conjured up by mentally unstable persons who were very convinced they saw it – so they reported what they saw, with terrifying results, whith the mainstream media used to it´s own advantage. Critics of the official narrative were silenced by members of the Bush administration who were as convinced as everyone else, that the fabled aircraft was for real – until the terrifying truth became obvious. A few years ago, a local school community reported that some kind of a rampage or a spree killing had taken place at the Sandy Hook elementary school. Crime scene investigators and the international community watched in horror as mass hysteria took over the town where the elementary was in, and soon spread from country to country, resulting in insanity among those who feared the imaginary killer the most. The more the police investigated, and the more others did, the more convinced investigators became, that it was a staged hoax, meant to tighten gun control legislations. The worst part about the worst episode of mental illness in the second decade of the 21st century was, that those who knew perfectly well that it was a mass hysteria did nothing to prevent it from spreading. ews broadcasting stations just went along. These two examples of mental illnesses show how easy it is for some mental illnesses to infect not only a person but even a whole community to the point it will take years, even decades to recover. If we go back to the Bible, it is widely agreed that it´s characters are British fiction based on early books like the Ethiopean Bible. One of the features that are most convincing about biblical characters, are their mental illnesses, which is an indicator that the people who wrote the Bible had a lot of knowledge about them. It is not unlikely that those who wrote the Bible and books like the Ethiopean Bible based their characters on persons they had knowledge of whom had suffered from conditions, which would be described as mental illnesses today. Thanks for the video and sorry for my language in my comment!Happy summer!!

  11. 16For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of
God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and
    also to the Greek.
17For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
    18For
the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and
    unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
19Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
    20For
the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly
seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal
power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
    21Because that,
when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were
thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart
    was darkened.
22Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
    23And
changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to
corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping
    things.
24Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the
lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between
    themselves:
25Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped
and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever.
    Amen.
26For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for
even their women did change the natural use into that which is against
    nature:
27And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the
woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working
that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of
    their error which was meet.
28And even as they did not like to retain
God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do
    those things which are not convenient;
    29Being filled with all
    unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness;
full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
30Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
31Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
    32Who
knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are
worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do
    them. (Romans 1:1-32)

  13. First of all, we as believers cant buy into the labels that a non Christian society puts on us. Our society, schools, teachers, professors, Dr's, etc… is getting more and more liberal in their way of thinking and we are allowing them to cripple us as believers and we are destroying our own children through the process.

God created different personalities for a reason, for His glory. He created some of us to be quieter, more laid back, somewhat passive, sometimes a loner, artistic… He's created some of us to be full of energy, louder, more aggressive, always on the go, always wanting to be around other people, a salesman type.. He's created some of us with a mixture of both. Some will be terrible with math while others are great at it… some will love history while others find it boring… Some will love science while others hate it. Some will learn better reading something while others learn by listening and still others learn only by doing.

Our society is teaching us that if our children don't learn what THEY think they should as fast as THEY think they should, the WAY they think they should, there must be something wrong with them. If our children are full of energy and learn better by doing than listening we allow society to tell us that they are ADD or ADHD and need to be put on medication. In many cases, putting kids on medication is nothing but a way to try and altar the personality and intellect that God purposefully instilled in them. Little by little some people are learning this and that's one reason that more Christians are starting to home school their kids.

When I was a child, I was a hyper, aggressive, artistic, type but also a loner much of the time. I had so much rhythm and was musically inclined.. some called me "a little Elvis Presley." The state of TX put wires on my head, connected me to a computer, tested me and labeled me as "slightly mentally retarded." They said that I was over hyper and had dyslexia (ADHD) so they put me on medication. The medication turned me into a zombie so my mom took me off of it. I struggled so bad trying to learn in class. One single teacher saw my strengths and found a special math program for me. It was math being sang in rhyme with super hyper music… this is how I learned my math and I learned it fast! I figured out that I can learn ANYTHING if it's set to good music or If done by repetition.

Turns out that I am NOT "slightly mentally retarded" at all, I just couldn't learn the way the state said I should learn.

  14. Thank you for this video, it really helped me see on the brighter side. Everybody tells me that i don't have enough faith by having this kind of thing in my mind even thought i really know in myself that Jesus Christ never ever leaves my heart and my life. My friends kept on telling me i'm miserable only because of myself, and that i'm doing this to myself, saying that as if i like being depressed and all. Telling my illness to my friends made me depressed more. I'm tired explaining myself to anyone. It feels like no one would really understand. Thank you for letting me know these things. Hope others could be as understanding as you do. God bless

  15. U could not have said it better i am diagnosed with BP & BPD. But worse, i am still dealing with & healing from rigid, legalistic Christians that simply have no clue. The ones i am told to seek help from, i now run from. I was also in an emotionally abusive marriage & told to be “silent & pray to win my husband over”. Two decades later i finally divorced. I no longer hear from my pastor. (I had moved away from the church but we still kept contact) And then there are those preaching that remarrying is a sin. With God, Jesus, however, i remain strong in my weakness.

  16. Good video and much needed. I just wish it was shorter and some in half the time. One of the issues with the illnesses the video seeks to address is poor attention span.
Regarding the audio, it was good, and music in the background may have been distracting.

  17. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16

Only Jesus Christ is the way to Heaven and be saved from hell.

"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
    Romans 5:8

"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:6

Have you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the grave? You must believe that Jesus is the one who paid for your sins and rose again to be saved from eternal damnation and instead go to heaven

"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." Romans 10:9

"For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one." 1 John 5:7

  18. So well said. Very practical and succinct. There is massive physical component to mental illness. There is a galaxy of misinformation and dysfunctional ideas in the Protestant world about mental health. DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT go see a "Biblical" or "Nouthetic" counselor if you have a long-term mental illness; 99% of the time they will make it worse. Find someone licensed by state to provide counseling. If you get healed at an altar call, keep taking medicine, keep getting counseling, keep getting help.

  19. I just want a close friends who I can trust, but it always seems like as soon as I stop being the jokey class clown people stop wanting to deal with me and leave my life
