President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he was aiming to avoid panic in the early days of COVID-19’s spread, as he responded to well-known journalist Bob Woodward’s new book saying that he knew the coronavirus was “deadly stuff” but wanted to “play it down.” Speaking at a news conference about possible Supreme Court picks, Trump told reporters: “If you said in order to reduce panic, perhaps that’s so.” He also said: “We had to show calm.”
